Where: Chamen is in the Central River Region, half way inland on the North bank of the river Gambia. It is a rural village 10km off the main road. The village consists of about 1500 people living in 110 compounds, most belonging to the Fula people group.
What: We run a small Nutrition Centre with six beds and give medical assistance at the local Government Health Centre. We also run a demonstration garden with medicinal plants, and a fruit tree nursery. We would like to see a skill-training centre established to provide training for the people of the area. The public school near us often asks if we can help them find teachers in Maths and English. We are in a pioneer situation without an established church, but we have Bible studies and a weekly service with a few local believers or interested peoples. There are many open doors to share Gods word, mainly on a one to one base.
Who? A small team of just one or two long-term medical workers plus one or two short-term volunteers with different professions work here. About ten local people as full or part time staff for the household, garden and nutrition centre. We are looking for people with practical skills to join our team, for example, those with skills in woodwork and pottery to set-up skills training centre. We are also keen for people to join our existing work in the demonstration garden, nutrition centre, and health centre, and teachers for the local school. |
