What:

We provide literacy programmes in order to fight illiteracy, ignorance and poverty.  We want to enable people to apply literacy skills in their daily activities.

Where:

Our literacy work is located mainly at Fajara with a Literacy Centre targeting the main language groups (Mandinka, Fula and Jola), and Mandinka Literacy producing materials in the Mandinka language. Up country, in Sibanor, there is a Jola Literacy centre where various Jola productions are prepared.   Literacy classes are established mainly in the Foni area, but also in the vicinity of our existing stations.

How:

Through a Literacy Centre for local languages

Through web sites for Mandinkas and Jolas

Through the initiative of local Christians to promote literature in their churches

Through a central point of display and promotion at headquarters and through co-operation with CLM book shop and others

Through recruitment of more personnel

Through co-operation with other organisations

Through literacy classes in local languages in Foni, Kombo and Nianija

Through promoting literature in local languages

Through Bible translation in Mandinka and Jola

Through reading material on health teaching, local history, collections of folk stories, proverbs and Christian teaching

Through co-operation with the Gambian Bible Society, the UBS and SIL in West Africa where necessary
