The Gambia

 

The Gambia gained  independence from Britain in 1965 and is now a republic under multiparty democratic rule. The Gambia has a population of approx 1.5m - 95% are considered to be Muslim. The remaining five per cent are either Animist or Christian. The population is mainly made up of four people groups - Mandinka, Fula, Wolof and Jola plus several other smaller groups.

About 75% of the population depends on crops and livestock for its livelihood. Small-scale manufacturing activity features the processing of peanuts, fish, and hides.
